TN Christmas holidays drinking thread

Over in Colchester with my sister's family. Some nice wines had. Paul Bara 2007, needs time. Grand Puy Lacoste 2003. In a lovely place presently. Full of fruit and some nice tertiary notes kicking in. Le Grappin SLB Blanc 2012. Lovely mineral and light oak touches

Christmas Eve saw a bottle of the Wine Society's Champagne won as part of a W-P team at Masterwined, Manchester in 2007(?). Absolutely lovely with the extra bottle age.

image.jpg A beautiful 1997 Conti Constanti Brunello di Montalcino Riserva with veal cutlets.
Surprisingly young, after opening 60 minutes before, we felt after tasting the need to deacant the bottle and helped us in between with a half of Billecart Salmon N.V.. After 30 minutes in the decanter it opened up nicely and drank perfectly.A very, very good showing of this traditional producer.

  • 1990 Château Clerc Milon - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (12/26/2015)
Very good, solid mature claret. Nicely dusty blackcurrrant fruit, opening out to a leafy and slightly earthy nose. Good core of sweet fruit. Qualitatively as good as previous bottles, but a more classical presentation cf some of the slightly more exotically fruited previous bottle; maybe the vintage character is calming a bit. Anyway, classic and lovely. **** (91 pts.)
  • NV Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Sous Bois - France, Champagne (12/26/2015)
Three years on from purchase. Very delicate nose, floral with gentle scents of marzipan and freshly baked sourdough. Pleasant, but a bit simple and easy going on the palate; dosage feels quite high. Nice, but also 'nice'. Will see if this tenses up overnight, but currently I prefer the straight nv. The nose is currently the winning element. *** (88 pts.)
  • 1988 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut - France, Champagne (12/25/2015)
Deep and rich gold. Hardly a bubble. Deep and rich, very gingery with a toasty element coming across in a sense of it being slightly oxidative. Multilayered and complex in a deep and broad style; very satisfying; could just do with a pinch of extra zip and line to carry it through. ****1/2 (94 pts.)

  • 2007 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Charmes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru (12/24/2015)
Mid straw with green highlights. Very Meursault rather than PYCM on the nose; nothing reductive etc, just nicely mineral and precise with the scent of warm butter wafting across its line. Similar on palate; very pure and focused and precise but with a butteriness building and enriching its frame. Lots of depth here. Very classy. Top **** (93 pts.)

Lovely Christmas Day here. Turkey dinner with eglise client 1994, 904 gran reserva 2001 and Morot gevrey 2001.
My brother liked the first and third wines, they are what he means when he asks for a light wine. He has good taste.

Tonight a 1996 Confuron-Cotetidot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Lavaut St Jacques. Pronounced red fruits and forest floor on the nose. The palate has depth and concentration of flavours, probably due to the low yields and old vines with this producer. Superb wine, really enjoying the 1996 vintage.

This was wonderfully nutty and complex but with superb balance. Utterly beautiful.

The Salvioni singing with complexity, secondary notes, resolved fruits and with all the puppy fat having burnt off. Annoyingly the last of my bottles, will still need to wait for the 2004 Brunello to start drinking!

Christmas Day: Pol Roger as an aperitif before the Bronze turkey with a bread, fennel, bacon and onion stuffing and petit pois, carrots, Brussels sprouts, roast potatoes, red cabbage cooked with apple and onion, bread sauce and mini-sausages wrapped in streaky bacon.

With the turkey: Bollinger NV for the White-only drinkers, Carruades de Lafite 1999 and La Dame de Montrose 2005 for the others.

The Carruades was bright and quite complex and distinctly better for the 5 plus years from the first bottles of the en primeur case.

The Montrose second was an early bottle of an en primeur case. One of only two 2005 cases for relatively early drinking I bought en primeur in my last such purchase [the other, Chateau de Fonbel] and a good recommendation with some years still ahead.

A lightly chilled [my preference] Taylor's 10 year Tawny Port with the Christmas pudding for some while others preferred the remainder of the Sauternes, La Tour Blanche 2001 from Christmas Day.

Boxing Day with remains from the turkey, Chateaubriand, some charcuterie and the remains of the Christmas cheeseboard.

Whites: Taittinger NV, 2 Muscadets from Domaine de la Pepiere: Clisson 2010 and Chateau-Thebaud, Clos des Morines 2009, Simonnet-Febvre, Chablis, Les Preuses 2009
and
Reds: La Petite Eglise, Pomerol 2001, Henri Gouges, NSG, Clos des Porrets 2002, Domaine des Lambrays, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Loups 2005

A brilliant 2001 Santenay Graviéres from Pousse d'Or tonight. Very fresh with developed fruit and plenty of earth and coffee. Acid still bright and balanced and a vein of grippy tannin giving structure. Still full of depth, I've a couple more and won't be in any rush to open them

Merry Christmas Nigel,
What was your Impression of the Petite Eglise. A half bottle lately was really fine abd at peak imo.
Cheers
Rainer
And I hope you and your family had a Merry Christmas too Rainer and a Happy New Year in prospect.
The Petite Eglise was one of the best I have had and certainly ready although the earliest from the case were a touch green and tannic. This was very tasty.
It used to be a regular case purchase on a vfm basis en primeur in the 90s with variable results - with the 2001 the last such.

Tonight, carrying on with the festive spirit, the Exhibition Gigondas 07. Lovely and big, spicy, with a touch of coal dust on the finish. Drinking very well.

  • 2009 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru (12/27/2015)
Full straw to midish gold. Initially a whiff of the aldehydic and seemingly quite advanced. Decanted and after 30mins or so the worrying aromas had lifted. Nose of white fruit, and a touch of clove and cardamom spice. Fat and viscous in the glass, and equally viscous feel to it on the palate. Reasonably rich with plenty of oomph. Decent length too. Couldn't acuse it of being elegant, but it's quite complex. Bare **** (91 pts.)

Yesterday some interesting mid-level wines; Allegrini's Valpolicella Superiore 2014 was spot on for me - fresh, silky, sinuous, direct, with good acidity and just so unworked, and a Chamonix Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 tasting nicely evolved and a little too straightforward perhaps (if I'm being picky) but also typical and enjoyable.

Last night's bottles:

Frédéric Mabileau Anjou Blanc 2014 - mentioned this as decent value on the TWS thread. Zesty, piercing chenin from young vines

Isole e Olena Chianti Classico 2013 - lower than usual alcohol in this vintage (13%) and tasting fresher as a result though perhaps not a wine for the long term

Had I opened this a few hours earlier it could well have been my bargain red of the year. Very good for about £7, I don't recall ever tasting Nerello Mascalese but it seems to add some weight to the usually light Frapatto.

Can anyone remember when Bollinger changed the design of their bottle? Just found an old style bottle tucked away in parents wine cupboard. Now in the fridge to pop open later on.

Sorry to answer so late.
The first shipments in the new bottle were bottled in 2012 and were an 08 base wine.
The older bottling is likely to be 07 base or earlier and should have drank pretty decently?

Billaud Simon Vaillons 04. Surprisingly youthful still.

Highlight so far has been Dominique Laurent's Pommard 1er Cru Refene 94 - which was majestically weightless, while offering wonderful substance.

Thanks Raymond I thought it was around 2012 but thanks for confirming. Yes it drank incredibly well, classic Bollinger with bottle age, given how developed it was I suspect this bottle was likely from prior to 2012.
