Pongracz Cap Classique Rosé, South Africa
Champagne Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial Rosé, France
Champagne Veuve Clicquot Brut Rosé, France
Three sparkling wines for St Valentine's day, starting with a traditional South African Cap Classique made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which has a lovely yeastiness as well as good red fruits and a fairly broad but elegant palate. Classy stuff and well priced. Moving on to two of the biggest brands, the Moët & Chandon pink is zingy in colour and aroma, with cherry and raspberry. Crisp on the palate with more of that raspberry and lemon edge to fruit and acidity, it is a nice rosé in an aperitif style. My favourit of the three was the Veuve Clicquot Brut Rosé, a much more wine-like Champagne with a soft salmon pink colour and touch of earthiness, mellow berry fruit and a savoury character, but still keen and fresh with its crisp mousse and long finish. Prices are £14.99 from Morrisons for the Pongracz (see all retailers on and around £37.00 for the two Champagnes from Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and various other retailers.
