Clos de los Siete 2008, Argentina
A wine from the project led by French consultant Michel Rolland in Mendoza's prime Uco Valley, and one which I have followed since it's first release around a decade ago. And I haven't always been a fan; recognising its quality and sheer bangs per buck value, but not particularly liking the style
which at one time was just all too much: too much oak, too much alcohol, too much tannin, too much sweetness. This 2008 is an altogether more harmonious and pleasing bottle that has a
beguiling nose of pencil-shavings and herbs, with a touch of floral character too adding lightening notes to solid black fruit. On the palate this really, really is just like biting in to a
ripe, juicy black plum, through the bittersweet skin and into the juicy flesh. All of those flavours are there, along with a touch of smokiness and spice into a long, balanced finish.
This should age for a few years too. £12.99, Majestic & Waitrose. See stockists at wine-searcher
