Château Saint Georges, St-Georges-St-Emilion 2007, France
For many people St-Emilion is a potentially confusing Bordeaux appellation thanks to fact that it has literally hundreds of estates, of variable quality, with a large percentage of them classified as 'Grand Cru'. This, however is an excellent wine and pretty good bargain with its price reduced from £17.99 to £12.99, coming not from St-Emilion itself but one of the satellite appellations called St-Georges-St-Emilion which has similar soils and grape varieties. Maturing nicely from the 2007 vintage, it has coffeeish depth with an earthiness too and deliciously sweet and ripe fruit at its core. The palate balances the savoury, meaty character of the wine with fresh spine of acid and tannin, but the fruit is creamy and chunkily honest and the finish quite long too. Drinking very well and should age a few years too. Watch the video for more information and food matching suggestions. £12.99, Majestic (on offer until 29th April 2013).
