video review: wine of the week

9th February 2014

Champagne Henriot, Rosé Champagne Brut NV, France
Henri Giraud, Rosé Champagne Brut 'Esprit' NV, France
With five days to go until St Valentine's Day, highlighting two pink Champagnes may be something of a cliché, but as we drink more rosé fizz on February 14th than any other day, then why not?. Both wines come from smaller houses: Champagne Henriot produces around 85,000 cases per year and makes its rosé in a rich, full, red berry style with lots of fruit and a bit of biscuit and brioche fatness too. It's a delicious and relatively robust wine, and a food-friendly style of Champagne. Henri Giraud is a grower who produces only around 20,000 cases annually, and his pink is tighter, more racy in an aperitif style. It's a vivacious wine with a fresh mousse and lots of lemony crunch, but again it remains very easy to drink, its raspberry character suiting lighter foods. Watch the video for much more detail of both wines, and for specific food matching suggestions. The Henriot costs £46 from Oddbins, Fortnum & Mason and Havey Nicols, but see all stockists on wine-searcher. The Henri Giraud costs £39.95 from Coe Vintners, Hedonism Wines and Champagne Direct, but again see all stockists on wine-searcher.
