Rigal, L'Instant Truffier Malbec 2011, France
The South West of France is home to some of the world's greatest Malbec-based wines, from appellations including Cahors. But recently the spotlight has been turned on the Malbecs of Argentina, so here's a French producer
fighting back by boldly displaying the Malbec 'brand' on the label. And it's a fresh and interesting take on Malbec too, made in a juicy, abundantly black-fruited style with immediate appeal, bursting with
ripe and sweet aromas and flavours, but without losing the signature spice and delicate floral edge of the grape. From 20-year-old vineyards in the Lot region, right next door to Cahors, it has good concentration and is not aged in barrel, emphasising the
primary brightness and boldness of the fruit. It's an obviously commercial style and not a keeper, but it is delightfully and skillfully done.
