video review: wine of the week

25th August 2013

Thymiopoulos, Jeunes Vignes de Xinomavro 2011, Greece
This is not the first Greek wine to make "Wine of the Week" by any means, but I think most, if not all of the others where white wines in that fresh, herb and mineral style producers can do so well. This is made from one of Greece's most important grapes, the Xinomavro (sometime spelled Xynomavro), given a little oak ageing after fermentation with wild yeast. It has a wonderfully savoury nose, touched with briary, sappy notes of tomato skins and earthiness, with a dry black fruitiness too. On the palate that dry and savoury character continues, in quite a complex wine that is youthful and not lacking in tannins or acidity, but again it is that sappy freshness and Beaujolais Cru-like bite and savour that makes this so interesting. Watch the video for more information and specific wine and food ideas. £11.50, Field & Fawcett, but see all stockists of the 2011 and 2012 vintage on wine-searcher.
