Cavicchioli, Malvasia Frizzante, Italy
I've already done my Valentine's day bit with a recommendation for a fine Saint-Amour a couple of weeks ago, but when this interesting and perfectly apt wine appeared I couldn't resist a second recommendation. It's a highly unusual frizzante (lightly sparkling) Malvasia from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, similar in style to a Moscato d'Asti from a little further north, with only 8% alcohol and a definite sweetness. The pretty floral label adds to the romantic Valentine's Day appeal. There are floral notes on the nose too, but a great depth of peach and apricot fruit - deeper and more luscious than Moscato - with a gentle effervescent palate and plenty more of that sweet, tropical and peach juice fruity appeal, the sweetness nicely balanced by some crisp, sherbetty acidity. Watch the video for more information as well as food matching suggestions. £8.99, Morrisons.
