|Fairview (South Africa) Goats do Roam 2001
This wine took the under £5 sector by storm a few years ago, with its cheeky pun on the French Côtes du Rhône (the two wines share similar grape belnds) and wonderfully vibrant and gluggable character. The critics loved it, and so did the wine buying public. This 2001 vintage is as back bang on form, and has a dark, vivid colour suggesting a lively wine. The perfumed cherry and violet aromatics soar from the glass, with little hints of gravel and cedary wood. On the palate it is creamy and quite full-bodied, with a great thrusting core of bittersweet raspberry and cherry fruit, all softened and deepened by a hint of chocloate and black plum. There's a grip of tannin into the finish, spice, pepper and plenty of juicy acidity.
£4.99, Oddbins, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Somerfield.
