video review: wine of the week

1st September 2013

F'OZ Alentejo Red Wine 2011, Portugal
The warm and dry inland area of the Alentejo is home to some of Portugal's most modern wineries and newest vineyards. In many ways typical of the area, this is a thoroughly modern and confident wine, but it uses three of Portugal's most traditional grape varieties: Castelão, Trincadeira and Aragonez - the latter perhaps best known as Spain's Tempranillo. Unoaked but made from a selection of the best grapes it has a robust, chunkily-fruited nose with deep bramble and liquorice aromas and plenty of spice. On the palate it is equally honest and open, with plenty of rustic tannic grip and good acidity, but more than enough deep-set, ripe and sweet berry fruit to match.
