coing muscadet
Château du Coing de St Fiacre, Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie 2007, France
The name is a bit of a mouthful, but then so is the wine. Muscadet remains one of the least fashionable wines I can think of, and yet when they get it right, producers in this cool region close to the mouth of the Loire Valley in western France can make terrific wines that are as crisp as you like, yet have texture and flavour. This Sur Lie (aged on the enriching lees post-fermentation) wine is beautifully fresh, with an aromatic nose showing delightful apple fruit, but zesty notes too with lots of citrus punch. Great fruit on the palate, with a rich, leesy mouthfeel but pristine, mussel- and clam-friendly acidity. Only 12% alcohol too. Available for around £9.95 from from Bluebird Wine Shop, Hercules Wines and Richard Granger. See all stockist on wine-searcher.
