video review: wine of the week

15th December 2013

Glen Carlou, Quartz Stone Chardonnay, South Africa
Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc seem to have become South Africa's white wine calling cards, but the country produces some superb Chardonnay too, including this from a 24-year-old vineyard in Paarl that is given the full Burgundian treatment, including 11 months in all new French oak barriques. It is a beautifully pitched and balanced wine with a modest 13% alochol, that opens with copious butterscotch and creamy almond notes over pristine fruit. Small floral nuances add complexity. In the mouth it has a limpid, pure character, with creaminess and a lime-butter quality that is at the same time rich and tangy, poised and full-fruited. It finishes with a fine savoury acidity and tension too. Watch the video for more information and food matching suggestions. £16.00-£19.00, see all stockists on wine-searcher.
