video review: wine of the week

23rd October 2011

Battlefield Wines Cabernet Shiraz 2011 & Sauvignon Blanc 2011, South Africa
Some wines are not only about the quality of the stuff in the bottle. As we approach Remembrance Sunday, purchases of these special release will generate money for UK armed forces charities and British servicemen and women. Made by First Cape Wines, the idea for the wines comes from Red Lion Foods, which donates 100% of its post-tax profits to a range of forces charities including the Royal British Legion, Help for Heroes and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. The honest truth is that these wines would not normally be 'wine of the week' material at £10, but each is easy-going, fruity and enjoyable and of gluggably decent quality, and the purchase of either is also a substantial donation to the charities involved. The producer, Sainsbury's and Red Lion Foods are not taking any profit from sales of the wines. £9.99, Sainsbury's
