Castello Banfi, Rosso di Montalcino 2007, Italy
Each year UK fine wine retailer Bibendum has a sale, with big reductions on a wide range of wines that always throw up some particularly interesting wines. The sale starts on
February 2nd 2010, and will run until February 15th 2010 - or until stocks are exhausted. This Sangiovese from Castello Banfi is reduced from over £15 to £7.82 and at
that price is a definite buy with its expressive tobacco and herbal edges to cherry fruit, and
something a little bit earthy and gamy. On the palate it has crisp definition. A medium-bodied wine with savoury bite, it is drinking very well and will partner grilled meats or
pasta with meaty sauces. £7.82, Bibendum. Also catching my eye in the sale are the 'Singing' Grüner Veltliner from Laurentz V (£9.85 to £6.40), the 2006 Brut
sparkling wine from Petaluma (£16.06 to £11.08) and the
Moscato Giallo Vogelmeier from Alois Lageder (£12.93 to £7.60).
