Winedeal

various bottles Winedeal is a UK-based company, but part of a leading European supplier of quality wines with sister companies in Holland, France, Belgium, Germany and Denmark. This, they say, gives them the benefita of a local business but with the buying power of a multi-national company with a €200m turnover. Storage of wine for all of the companies is in Holland, so whilst deliver might take a little longer, it is charged at just £5.99 per order and is free for orders above £120. Winedeal's buyers take advantage of over-supplies, buying parcels of wines that are offered at substantial discounts to their regular prices. They say "The quality of the wine is high, but so is volume. Our buyers therefore really negotiate on a price, without ever compromising their high standards of quality of the wines."

white wines

Las Moras, Chardonnay Reserve 2009, Argentina
The fruit for this wine comes from San Juan, and the wine is aged in oak for 12 months. This wine won 'silver' at both the IWC and Decanter awards. Very appealing nose with butter and toast suggesting nicely handled French oak, and a suggestion of ripe, exotic fruit beneath tempered by creaminess and an apple character. On the palate this has mouth-filling presence, with plenty of power and concentration (though alcohol is a moderate 13.5% ABV). Some good balancing acidity sits against just slightly prominent oak in the finish. Even better with roast chicken or fish in creamy or buttery sauces. 88/100. £13.49 now £8.99, Winedeal.co.uk.

Las Moras, Pacha Mama Torrontés 2010, Argentina
This certified organic Torrontés also comes from San Juan, and whilst this variety can sometimes be flamboyantly aromatic, the floral and peachy aromas here are subdued (which some may prefer). There's a typical little leafy streak too, and on the palate this has a juicy green apple fruit and lemon zest acidity that maintains a real edge to the fairly rich texture, a little spice developing in the finish. 85-86/100. Was £13.49 now £8.99, Winedeal.co.uk.

Jean Voisier, Sancerre 2009, France
Fine lemon and lime-rind nuances to more herbaceous, leafy Sauvignon characters. On the palate this has lovely fruit intensity, the concentration and precision of the citrus and apple fruit also leaving enough room for some sweet, more tropical notes. A big core of acidity lengthens the finish leaving this tangy and powerful. 89/100. Was £14.99 now £10.49, Winedeal.co.uk.

red wines

Step Road, Private Selection McLaren Vale Shiraz 2008, Australia
This screwcapped South Australian Shiraz is bold and peppery on the nose, with some mossy and herbal aromas adding to the complexity of the picture. The palate is nicely pitched, with just an echo of a bloody, gamey note to the bold, rich plum and berry fruit, and soft tannins and acids leading to a balanced, but fairly easy drinking finish. 87-88/100. Was £12.99 now £7.99, Winedeal.co.uk.

Olivara, M.O. de Olivara Toro 2006, Spain
A recent Wine of the Week here on wine-pages, this wine from Toro in northwest Spain comes from 40-year-old vines planted at altitude and has picked up a string of international medals including a Decanter Awards gold. The nose brims with deep-set, juicy black fruit, framed by some classy oak and a nicely earthy and gamey spiciness too. On the palate it is deeply fruited, a tight, blue-black seam of fruit and the tannins giving some plum-skin bite to make it savoury and structured. A lot of wine for the money and five years in the cellar will do it no harm. 90/100. Was £13.49 now £8.99, Winedeal.co.uk.

Senorio de Convey, Priorat 2008, Spain
A gold medal-winning wine composed of Syrah, Garnacha and Mazuelo (Carignan) aged nine months in barrel. There's a dusty, blue-black liquoricy fragrance, with intriguing herbal and gamey nuances. Lots of interest here. The palate has intense and creamy black fruit, but it is wrapped around a spine of sinewy tannin, spicy oak and good acidity that gives this layers of texture and flavour. Another star of this line up. 90/100. Was £13.49 now £8.99 , Winedeal.co.uk.
