under a fiver

Yali, Wetland Merlot Rosé 2009, Chile
Creamy but bright and clean as a whistle under its screwcap, this has strawberry and watermelon fruit, with a background of soft earthiness. On the palate the fruit is lovely: very juicy and ripe, with a richness to the flavour and texture, and a finish that has the merest hint of sweetness but an overall dry and savoury balance. 86/100. £6.49 but £4.79 when you buy two, Majestic until 30th August.

under a tenner

Tesco, Finest 10 Year Old Grand Tawny 2000, Australia
Made for Tesco by Seppeltsfield and released to celebrate 10 years of the 'Finest' range of wines at Tesco, this was the star of a recent in-depth tasting of the range. In a screwcap bottle and weighing in with 19.0% abv, it is an extraordinary bargain delivering a glorious noseful of raisins, walnuts, sultanas and creamy cappuccino. The super sweet palate is just flooded with glycerine-rich opulence, and yet that bittersweet, marmalade orange tang and burnt toffee depth of flavour is endless. Superb. 94/100. £8.99, Tesco.

under twenty

Domaine Le Soula, Trigone Vin de Pays de Côtes Catalanes 2008, France
Gérard Gauby's Trigone is a 100% Syrah wine from the Languedoc, harvested at just 35hl/ha and aged in tanks, not barrels. There's a lovely little whiff of love hearts and Parma violets, the fruit beneath reminiscent of cherries, raspberry and red liquorice. The palate is no less complex and alluring, the fruit staying bright and focused on those fresh, red fruit flavours, with a certain burnt orange tang and a freshness to the tannins and acidity that extends the finish. 90/100. £9.99, Raeburn Fine Wines.

sky's the limit

Tetre Roteboeuf 2006, Saint-Emilion
Cedar and refined, perfumed red fruits. Nice suggestion of fudgey, rich depth and plenty of spice. The palate is thick with tannin still and has great concentration. A liquoricy edge adds drama to the sweet, full fruit in a hugely concentrated and long wine. This has decades ahead of it and was the stand-out wine in a mini-vertical from this estate. 95/100. £89.49, Corney & Barrow. See all stockists on wine-searcher.com
