Armit Wines

These might be wines that have been reviewed during the month on wine-pages, or have appeared in my newspaper column, or they may be wines from a recent tasting that hasn't yet been written-up in a full-length report. There is a growing archive of these four of the best choices each month.

Petaluma (Australia) Bridgewater Mill Chardonnay 2002
The famous Brian Croser name is on this multi-region Chardonnay from Petaluma, where fruit was sourced from the Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills and Clare Valley. Now nicely mature, this has lovely creamy pear and meally apple fruit qualities with nuances of ginger and almond. On the palate there is plenty of pineapple and lemon drop flavour, and there is nicely pitched acidity here, with plenty of brightness and tang, and a fine lemon and lime cut. Good length, and although you wouldn't want to lay this wine down, it genuinely is drinking very nicely now (ie it is not over the hill) and will go on for a year or so yet. A genuine bargain this, as its full price of £7.78 has been discounted to just £4.28 in Bibendum's bin-end sale, but the bad news is that sale doesn't kick off until February 27th - check www.bibendum-wine.co.uk.
