Liv-Ex Market Report
by Liv-ex.com, July 2004
Trading
Trade in July began where June left off with extremely brisk Bordeaux 2003 activity over the first two weeks of the month. The market then hit a brick wall. Trade was down 65% from June's record levels, but still up 50% year
on year. The Liv-ex 100 composite fell 1.6% in July, giving back the previous months gains. Stock held by the UK's leading stockholders dropped by 6.6%.

July was a quiet month for the critics, with Bordeaux 2003 and Burgundy 2002 grabbing the headlines. What little new excitement we did see came in the form of updates on the increasingly well-regarded Sauternes 2001.
which looks increasingly like one of the region's best ever vintages. Tanzer was effusive and advised "the vintage to focus on today is 2001. These are wines to buy and lay down, not wines to consume young."
(Parker, WS and Tanzer comments in full report)
At last the Bordeaux 2003 campaign seems well and truly complete. It was one of the longest, most frenzied and controversial yet. Its length was a result of a wait-and-see game played by the chateaux.
The frenzy was built around the critics' favourites and concentrated in maybe 20-30 wines. And the controversy surrounded the stark differences in scores on some wines - like Pavie - and
some jaw dropping prices upon release.
