Guide to the January Sales 2014
by Tom Cannavan
Each January sees a crop of wine sales and as always there will be a mixture of genuine bargains and less tempting propositions, but there's no doubt that
with a bit of judicious research and planning, there are some very good buys around. Every wine retailer and his dog has some sort of
sale on in January and I can't possible feature them all, so this mini-guide concentrates on those merchants that are also
sponsors of wine-pages
. As always, the best bargains will go quickly, and I never receive commission on sales from any company featured.
If more sales are announced by my sponsoring companies I will add them here.
Berry Bros & Rudd
With up to 30% off there's lots to like in the Berry Bros & Rudd
sale. An intriguing case of twelve bottles - the 'White Burgundy Collection' - costs £200 (a saving of £99.70) and includes some very nicely chosen wines, mostly
from the outstanding 2010 white Burgundy vintage. I'm also intrigued by a Portuguese white, the 2012 Dom Rafael Branco, from one of the best estates in the Alentejo called Mouchão. The price has been
slashed from £11.45 per bottle to just £7.95. Another outstanding buy appears to be the 2010 Domaine de l'Hortus Rouge, star of the Pic Saint Loup region with a cult following, and down from
£22.95 to just £16 in the sale. Most wines are sold only by the case of 6 or 12 and the minimum order is £100. UK delivery is free
Waitrose Wine Direct
The January clearance at waitrosedirect.com
, like all sales, is "whilst stocks last," but
wines catching my eye include the 2009 Vosne Romanée from Domaine Gros which looks like a bargain at
£31.99 down from £39.99 and the Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2009, down to £49.99 from £60. Note also that Waitrose.com
will offer a free bottle of Champagne with every
grocery order of £50 or more during January. Delivery is free.
Bordeaux Wine Investments (BWI)
In the January Stock Clearance
at BWI there are top-end wines available with discounts of between
5% and 25% and you can download the list from the web site. Amongst those with 20% or more off are wines like the 2005 Mouton-Rothschild and 2009 Château Lafite. At a more modest level, the
2007 Crianza from Bodegas Viña Magana in Navarra picked up 94 points from the Wine Advocate, and 12 bottles costs just £84, a saving of £21.
Wine Owners is a sophisticated platform for trading in fine wines. Whilst they do not have a January Sale as such, they currently
have a good stock of 'duty-paid' wines, where the duty and VAT is already included in the price. These wines can represent very good value. Just click the "Duty Paid" option from the "All Status Type" filter
on the list of wines currently offered for sale at wineowners.com
Great Western Wine
Bath and Internet based Great Western Wine
has over 80 lines reduced. These include favourites of mine like
the 'Inés' Vinho Verde from Adega de Monção down from £8.95 to £6.30, or for something different, Ixsir of Lebanon's excellent Grande Reserve White is down from £20 to £16. Sticking
with less familiar white wines, the Dry Furmint 2011 from Patricius in Tokaji is also on offer, down from £11.75 to £8.80. Free delivery on 12 bottles or more.
