Garofoli (Marches), "Grosso Agontano" Rosso Conero Riserva 1994
Garofoli is the top red wine producer in this predominantly white wine region. Deep ruby-purple just fading at rim.
Nose is muted, but with coaxing there is plummy fruit, cherries and a nicely rustic,
barnyard aroma. Quite full-bodied and smooth on the palate the wine is subtly delicious, with plenty of blackcurrant
and bitter-cherry fruit, an earthy, gamy meatiness and good framework of supporting tannins. Not too acidic, it is well-balanced
though displaying just a little old-woody dryness on the finish. Lovely stuff for drinking within a couple of years. (02/99)
