label Santa Carolina (Chile) Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 1996
This is a dark, lush crimson black. The nose is suffused with sweet, ripe oaky vanilla and spice beneath an absolute raft of crunchy blackcurrant fruit. There is a lovely dense, savoury quality on the palate with more blackcurrant fruit but some nice bitter-sweet cherry and black olive nuances. It has a big, chunky tannic structure though it is by no means clumsy. There is moderate acidity, the overall impression being creamy, ripe and rich. This has great personality and is impressive and well balanced stuff. Currently available from at 120 per dozen. (12/99)
