Each year the wine exchange Liv-ex conducts a survey of its wine trade members upon their return from the en primeur tastings in Bordeaux.
This survey includes our negociant members based in Bordeaux. By and large it would seem that the Bordelaise are looking forward to a successful campaign. It certainly helps that recent numbers out of the US, and positive
comments from US Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan, have strengthened the dollar to levels not seen since the fourth quarter of last year. American buyers are said to be lining up.
The responses of the survey threw up far greater differences of opinion than we have seen since its inauguration. For example, the top five wines category produced 28 different names, while the best value
and most disappointing wines produced nearer 50 a piece. Also, a higher proportion of wines than usual featured in BOTH the best and most disappointing categories. So, to the results:
